The Story of Lord Ram and Kevat: A Tale of Devotion

1.1 The Journey Begins
When Lord Shri Ram, Mata Sita, and Laxman left Ayodhya for their 14-year exile, they reached the banks of the holy River Ganges. There, they met Kevat, a simple boatman and a loyal follower of Nishadraj Guha.
Shri Ram wanted to cross the river, but Kevat did not let them board the boat immediately.
1.2 Kevat’s Innocence and Fear
Kevat folded his hands and spoke to Lord Ram with great humility. He said:
- “Lord! I have heard that the dust from your feet turned a stone into a woman (Ahalya).”
- “My boat is made of wood. If your feet touch it and it turns into a woman, how will I feed my family?”
Hearing this innocent logic, Shri Ram smiled. He was deeply moved by Kevat’s pure heart and devotion.
1.3 The Loving Conversation
To reassure the boatman, Lord Ram spoke kindly:
- “O Kevat! Please take us across the Ganga. I am very happy with your love.”
- “I understand your worry, and I will help you.”
Before letting Ram enter the boat, Kevat washed the Lord’s holy feet with water to “wash away the dust.” Only then did he proudly seat them in his boat.
1.4 Crossing the Ganga and the Final Blessing
After Shri Ram, Laxman, and Mata Sita safely reached the other side, Lord Ram offered to pay Kevat for his service. However, Kevat refused to take any money.
He said beautifully:
“O Lord! Today, I have helped you cross this small river. When my life ends, please help me cross the Bhavsagar (the ocean of worldly existence).”
