On 29 Jan 2026, the Supreme Court has stayed the UGC Equity Regulations 2026 for now, raising concerns about vagueness and potential misuse, and keeping the 2012 anti-discrimination rules in place while it examines the matter further. 
I’m relieved — not because equity doesn’t matter, but because clarity and fairness matter just as much.
Equity should heal India’s campuses — not harden them into rival factions.
Rules must protect the vulnerable, and protect the innocent from being trapped in vague procedures.
I salute the idea of judicial scrutiny that strengthens democracy. Now let’s hope the next draft is:
✅ precise
✅ constitutional
✅ fair
✅ safeguards-based
✅ capable of delivering justice without creating new divisions
